26-year-old folk/soul singer Sam Brookes has unveiled the music video for upcoming single ‘Numb’, due for release in October. The track follows a high-profile collaboration with Basement Jaxx on upbeat future single ‘What A Difference Your Love Makes’, which highlights Sam’s artistic versatility as the two tracks couldn’t be more different!
The most striking feature of this exquisite release is Sam’s stirring and emotion-ridden lead vocal. It moulds so smoothly from beautiful high melodies to angst-ridden lower tones. Tactile snare-based percussion and intricate folky undercurrents support this enchanting performance, which also makes use of rousing and poignant lyricism. Another theme that Sam is great at exploring in the meshing of organic and electronic instrumentation – alien-sounding synthesizers somehow compliment the wistful guitar motifs of the track.
The video focusses on Sam in a room that has fallen into disrepair, and plays on imagery of decay and the macabre. There’s a haunting ambience to the footage that captures the uneasy emotions of the record perfectly.
